The Legacy of the Springbank Distillery

Located at the tip of the Kintyre Peninsula on Scotland's west coast, Campbeltown was once hailed as the "Whisky Capital of the World," boasting over 30 distilleries. While most of those names have vanished into history, Springbank stands as one of the few survivors determined to protect its heritage.

Founded in 1828, the distillery was taken over by J&A Mitchell in 1837 and has remained under the ownership of the exact same family ever since. Renowned as Scotland's longest-running family-owned distillery, it has consistently prioritized production consistency and terroir over expansion.

Why This Bottling Is Exceptional

Springbank’s primary point of pride lies in its 100% floor-to-bottle operation, where every step from malting to bottling takes place entirely on-site. Turning the barley by hand, distilling, maturing, and bottling within a single facility is an exceptionally rare practice in modern Scotland. This self-contained process ensures the distillery's DNA is deeply imprinted on the spirit.

The spirit undergoes a unique 2.5-times distillation process. Combined with lightly peated malt, this method yields a complex character frequently described as the "Perfume of Malt"—a rich, deep flavor profile punctuated by a distinct coastal salinity.

This "100 Proof" is a contemporary reinterpretation of a classic expression that disappeared from the core lineup in the 1990s. Since its revival in 2025, it has been established as a regular release, produced in small batches roughly every three months. Matured exclusively in 100% ex-bourbon casks, its profile stands in stark contrast to mature expressions shaped by sherry seasoning or multi-cask blending. The wood influence is intentionally dialed back to let the raw Springbank spirit take center stage, allowing enthusiasts to enjoy the subtle variations that naturally occur between batches.

Tasting Notes

• Nose: A crisp opening reminiscent of green apples and lemon zest. Notes of gorse flower, mineral, and brine form the backdrop, layered with a subtle touch of vanilla and a dusty, light peat smoke.

• Palate: Initial sweetness of powdered sugar and white chocolate gives way to honey and citrus fruits. Beneath Springbank's characteristically oily, thick mouthfeel, gentle peat smoke and a youthful, peppery spiciness emerge.

• Finish: Long and lingering, featuring honey, gooseberry, malt sweetness, and a final wave of maritime salinity.

• With Water: A single drop significantly opens up the dram, bringing out ripe fruit notes of yellow peach and melon, alongside a mellow honeyed sweetness. The youthful, robust nature of the spirit means it responds beautifully to dilution, making it highly rewarding to explore on the rocks or with measured additions of water.
