世界的に評価されるジャパニーズウイスキーの代表格、サントリー山崎蒸溜所が手がける、2020年限定リリースの構成原酒シリーズ「山崎 2020 EDITION」。
このシリーズは、山崎蒸溜所で多様につくられる原酒の個性を際立たせることを目的として企画され、それぞれ異なる樽で熟成された5種類のシングルモルトで構成されています。

本作では、スペイン北部の森で育まれたスパニッシュオークを使用した特注の樽のみを採用。これらの樽は、スペイン現地の製樽会社にてサントリーの厳格な仕様に基づいて製造され、一度シェリー酒を熟成した後に、山崎のモルト原酒を熟成するために使用されました。

スパニッシュオークは、アメリカンオークと比較してポリフェノール（とりわけタンニン）が豊富で、熟成中により濃厚で複雑な風味を原酒にもたらします。
その特徴を活かし、本製品では非常に凝縮感のある甘みと、印象的な酸味、そして完熟した果実を思わせる深みある香りが見事に調和しています。

香りは、レーズンやドライトマトのような凝縮された果実香が主軸となり、熟成感のある芳醇さが鼻を包み込みます。味わいは、オーク由来の上質なタンニンを伴った濃密な甘みと、バランスの取れた爽やかな酸味が交互に現れ、複雑かつ奥行きのある味わいを演出。余韻には、ほのかなほろ苦さと共に酸味が穏やかに残り、心地よく長く続きます。

Highly acclaimed worldwide, the Suntory Yamazaki Distillery represents the pinnacle of Japanese whisky-making. The Yamazaki 2020 EDITION is a limited-release component whisky series launched in 2020, crafted to highlight the diversity and character of the various single malts produced at Yamazaki. The collection consists of five expressions, each matured in a different type of cask.

Among them, the Yamazaki Spanish Oak 2020 Edition has drawn particular attention.
This whisky was matured exclusively in specially commissioned casks made from Spanish oak harvested in the northern forests of Spain. These casks were crafted by a local cooperage in Spain according to Suntory’s exacting standards, then used to age sherry before being filled with Yamazaki malt whisky.

Compared to American oak, Spanish oak contains higher levels of polyphenols—especially tannins—which impart a richer, more complex flavor profile during maturation. The result is a harmonious balance of deep sweetness, bright acidity, and a rich, ripe fruit aroma reminiscent of dried fruits.

On the nose, you’ll find concentrated notes of raisins and dried tomatoes, enveloped in a matured, full-bodied aroma. The palate reveals layers of intense sweetness and refreshing acidity, enhanced by fine tannins from the oak. The finish lingers gently with a pleasant bitterness and tartness, leaving a lasting impression.

This expression was developed with the acclaimed Yamazaki Sherry Cask in mind, aiming for a similarly high-quality profile. Released in limited quantities and primarily distributed to bars and hospitality venues, it has become increasingly rare in the market. Today, it is highly sought after by collectors and whisky connoisseurs both in Japan and internationally, valued for its rarity and exceptional craftsmanship.
