The Isle of Skye, Scotland—a region where Talisker long stood as the sole distillery representing the island. Now, a historic milestone has been reached with the birth of Skye's second distillery in 190 years: Torabhaig.

Housed in a 19th-century stone farmstead that underwent a meticulous four-year restoration, Torabhaig commenced production in 2017. The distillery draws its process water from the Allt Gleann, a stream running adjacent to the site. Inside, two pot stills named "Sir Ian" and "Lady Noble" produce a powerful, heavily peated spirit boasting some of the highest phenol concentrations in Scotland. Yet, Torabhaig operates under the guiding philosophy of "Well-Tempered Peat"—a commitment to crafting a structured, harmonious smokiness rather than delivering mere raw intensity. Despite its youth, this distillery has already captured the attention of connoisseurs worldwide.

This "Special Reserve" is bottled without reduction at a cask strength (batch strength) of 59% ABV, capturing the raw character of Torabhaig. The liquid is a marriage of spirits matured across four distinct cask profiles: ex-bourbon casks form the core, expertly blended with Oloroso sherry, Pedro Ximénez (PX) sherry, and virgin American oak casks. The vanilla and maritime salinity from the bourbon wood, the raisins and dried fruit sweetness from the sherry casks, and the vibrant woodiness from the virgin oak layer together seamlessly, showcasing the dynamism of the young spirit without sacrificing complexity.

• Nosing & Palate: The initial nosing reveals dry bonfire smoke, coastal brine, and a crisp brightness akin to lemon peel. Beneath this layer emerges vanilla and a raisin-like sweetness derived from the sherry wood. On the palate, the texture is remarkably smooth, masking the heat of its 59% proof. Flavors of savory smoke reminiscent of grilled seafood and barbecue develop alongside black pepper spice and the rich depth of dried fruits.
